Studying at Music School: How I Learn Intentionally

Sometimes I struggle to retain information from lectures and classes, so here are 3 things I do to learn intentionally even when the material is confusing.

1. Asking all the questions — dealing with feeling self-conscious about it.

Asking questions can really seem super daunting, but I have found the more I ask, the more comfortable I get with asking.

Even if the question feels stupid to me, I will try to ask it. And who knows, there might be someone else in the class with the same question who I grateful you asked it.

2. Finding loopholes in your understanding

How do we do this? By reteaching the material! I usually do this with a whiteboard and some stuffed toys.

Literally going through and teaching the toys the material really opens my eyes to understand where I don’t fully grasp the lesson.

By doing this, I can identify what I don’t fully understand and then I can ask the right questions.

3. Making all the mistakes — and writing them down

If I go back through my homework from high school, there is a lot of red pen marking down correct answers and writing explanations. When I look at my tests, it seems that the more red pens there was on the homework, the less there is on the tests.

Scribbling down anything that helped me learn the material was a game changer for my understanding of material.

If you are in a tricky class, I am sending you so much positive encouragement!
