Here’s How You Can Work Through Frustration in Practice

You know the feeling. You are practicing, but it just isn’t sticking. You keep trying over and over again, but it just doesn’t seem to be working. The feeling of frustration creeps in, and you just feel stuck.

This is a completely normal thing to feel as a musician. Every deals with this. So how do we work through it? Let’s dive in.

Frustration with music is completely normal

Think of your favourite musician. Whether it is a soloist like Hilary Hahn, or an orchestral musician, think of them in your mind. Now, they have dealt with frustration. Each and every one of them. They all have worked through it.

So if they have dealt with frustration and have worked through it, so can you.

I remember when I first started making reeds, my teacher casually said, “you are going to go insane.” Now, he was joking, but the validity of being frustrated in the process is definitely there. That’s just part of the process.

Let it wash over you — don’t push it down

You know when you stub your toe, it really hurts. But have you noticed, that if you don’t tense up and just relax, the pain goes away quicker? If you tense up, the pain still stays there and it feels bigger, but when you relax, it’s almost like the pain relaxes too.

That’s the same thing with frustration. If you try to tense up and push the frustration down, it will only get bigger. But if you relax, breathe, notice the frustration, but let it flow through you, it can feel less intense. Try it next time you are frustrated.

Let’s take a quick break from working through audition stress and chat a little bit about musical inspiration. You know that you and I both need a little musical motivation. We all do. That is why there is the Spring Roundup, full of fun and inspiring pieces of musical motivation that goes right in your inbox. This is perfect for that little boost of motivation we all need. From inspiring Instagram reels from musicians to your new favorite practice pencils. All the way to a podcast recommendation that will inspire you to listen to more music in a new and insightful way. If this sounds like something you need (because, let’s be honest, we all need this), sign up and get it in your inbox.

Know when to stop and take a break

Sometimes, the frustration can really build up, and we just need to pause. And that is completely okay. So if that is you, take a break! Do a hobby. Go for a walk. Grab some food. Whatever you need to do.

And if this feels like you have given up, know that rest is productive. If taking a break is what you need, then take it!

Frustration doesn’t have to be such a big thing. I hope you found this insightful.

All my best,

Eleanor
