It is getting to that time of the year where we lock in again. Where we have more auditions and start focusing on concerts. So how do we spark that motivation back in the practice room? Here are three ways that I have found helpful.
1. Going to concerts
I recently went to a concert put on by the Edinburgh International Festival. It was of The Carmen Suite for strings and percussion. Seeing just how much fun the musicians were having as they were playing live was so inspirational to me. I went home excited to practice my oboe.
We tend to focus so much on the process of practicing that sometimes we forget the beauty of the end goal. Going to concerts can really remind us why we are practicing in the first place. And that can really help with motivation.
2. Creating meaningful goals
Practicing without direction can get pretty boring pretty fast. Creating at least one meaningful goal can help the practice to stay focused and interesting. Whether that is improving a certain skill or playing in a concert, having a goal is a great step towards creating motivation.
I challenge you to come up with at least one goal for your practice.
3. Planning your practice sessions
Now that we have some goals, the next helpful thing is to plan the sessions. Motivation comes from movement. It doesn’t just happen. From planning out our sessions, we can see the direction we want to go. Once we start seeing that movement, it becomes more motivating.
I wish you all the best with your practicing!
