Need a little extra practice motivation? Here is how you can cultivate it in your sessions.
1. The 10 Minute Trick
I’ve found that what helps me the most with motivation is starting something. When I have started it, that’s when the motivation comes. It comes from the momentum.
The 10 minute trick is simple: start practicing for just 10 minutes. When the 10 minutes is up, see if you want to keep going. You might find you do.
The idea of 10 minutes takes the pressure of a longer session off, and it helps you to just get started, which is sometimes the hardest part.
2. Analysing your practice schedule
Sometimes the thing that is stopping us actually our schedule. For some people, few long practice sessions are good. For others it might be better to do more frequent smaller sessions.
Try a few ways to see what works best for you. That might help with gaining more motivation.
3. Drawing inspiration from others
Maybe it is going to a concert or seeing a friend perform, but getting inspiration from others can be so helpful.
Another way to do this is playing with other people. Even if it is for fun, this might help you to get excited about your practice.
When we practice alone in a room all the time, sometimes we forget that collaborating and listening to others is what we need musically.
I wish you all the best in your practice endeavors!
All my best,
Eleanor
