How to find the spark in your repertoire… again

When we practice the same thing over and over, it can get boring. Here are 3 ways to revive that boring repertoire.

1. Creating a story around the repertoire

I did this a lot when I was preparing university auditions for months and months. Add more meaning to the notes by creating a story around them. Whether it is a walk in the woods or something more specific, create your narrative.

As you practice the music, the story will change as well. Let it flow into something new and exciting as you progress.

2. Finding different places to play it

If all you are doing is playing it in a practice room, maybe try somewhere else — even a recital hall.

You could also just find someone to play it with you. Depending on the parts available, you could add a collaborative pianist or another kind of instrumentalist. Play around with it. This can add the spark into it again.

3. Watching masterclasses and performances

When I was practicing excerpts for a youth orchestra audition, I found masterclasses with the excerpts on YouTube, and it completely transformed my approach to the excerpts.

Whether you are watching masterclasses or going to performances, getting some input on the pieces can shed some new light and excitement on them.

These are some ways that I have found the excitement in repertoire… again.

All my best,

Eleanor
